CHAPTER 29

Realizing he had not removed Linley’s small Tutor disc from his temple Kai did so now, then walked outside into the cool night air, making his way down the path through a short stretch of woods, picking a few herbs along the way. He soon arrived at the bank of the river, where he stripped down to bare skin, first washing his clothing then himself. The body sanitizer in the privy room aboard the Thraken craft had served its purpose, but it did not compare to the scent and feel of fresh herbs and cold water.

With wet clothing wrung out and slung over his shoulder, having briefly sat on a rock while slipping still- wet feet into his boots before strapping them up, Kai made the short trip back to Da’o, its outside torches lit and welcoming him home. His wet clothes were then hung over their usual crystal stalagmites in the initial chamber. His boots were left near the infinite flame. Kai walked naked into the inner chamber of Da’o, stretched out on the cave’s cold and hard floor then donned Linley’s small Tutor, thinking of Asher and wondering if Graven, Jinvil, and Rask realized their provisional captain was no longer with them.



“My Captain,” Kai said, bowing quickly at the neck.

Captain Tei Tog sat on the ancient chair that would one day carry his name, resplendent in his red-trimmed cape, fine linen shirt, a golden gurupa emblazoned upon his chest plate, and thick, decorative gold metal cuffs on each wrist. He motioned with the fingers of his upturned hand for Kai to approach.

Kai stepped forward, bowing again. “As you had been told many days ago, the Thrakens are safely on their new bastian, my lord. Their old bastian is now uninhabitable. All that you have asked of me, I have done. It is time...I have come to request your assistance that I might return home.”

“I have yet to see my guardsmen fully trained in the Old Arts,” the captain replied, leaning slightly forward in his chair, head cocked in a challenging manner.

“They have the essentials. They can learn no more from me that persistence and practice cannot teach them.”

“When it is time for you to leave, I will tell you,” the captain stated, then sat back against his chair.

Kai knew he had been dismissed. “My lord?”

The captain inverted his hand again, flicking his fingers as if to say, ‘be gone,’ yet Kai remained stubborn and standing before him.

“I am requesting a private audience with you, my lord,” Kai said instead, his feet squarely planted.

His association with the captain had changed dramatically since the earlier days of his arrival to this time, nearly a full season ago. He had seen signs of it before his last trip to the old Bastian Thraken. The implications of this change could no longer be ignored. His relationship with the man seated in the plush and lavish chair had started with the great captain standing before him as a kind and fatherly figure. It had gone from that to his being a kind yet strict captain to his newest guardsman.
